Maine Offers Unique Winter Activities

When it comes to winter fun and adventure, Maine offers a host of options for
those looking beyond the ordinary.

Skijoring - Add some thrill to your cross country skiing experience by attaching
yourself to a harnessed dog and trying the sport of skijoring.
New England Dog
Sledding at the Telemark Inn near Bethel offers lessons by the hour on groomed
trails that can also be used for recreational use. Bring your own dog or use one
of owner Steve Crone's Siberian huskies. Call 207-836-2703 for more
information. The Maine Highlands Sled Dog Club (207-285-0099) and the
Downeast Sled Dog Club host skijoring races and clinics during January
through April.

Dog Sledding - Maine Dogsledding Adventures at Nahmakanta Lake Camps in
Millinocket offers dogsled trip packages from a half day ride and demo to a
three day/three night guided excursion. Owners Don and Angel Hibbs have
traveled more than 40,000 miles by dogteam and have taken first place in long
distance races in the U.S. and Canada. Winterized lakeshore cabins
accommodate two to eight people and all meals are served in the main lodge.
Call 207-731-8888 for more information.

Even if you've never been to Maine, you might recognize the Yukon huskies at
Mahoosuc Guide Service in Newry. When Kevin Slater and Polly Mahoney's
dogs aren't staring in movies they are taking guests over frozen Umbagog Lake
or trails near Grafton Notch. There is no experience necessary for the day trips,
weekend overnights, or up to six-day northwoods trips led by Mahoosuc's loyal
canine teams. Call 207-824-2073 for more information.

Snowshoeing - Southern Maine's Harris Farm and XC Ski Center in Dayton has
40 kilometers of trails through fields and forest.
The Maine Audubon Society's
Gilsland Farm Sanctuary  in Falmouth is always a great place for a walk, and its
network of trails are open to snowshoers.
The Nordic Heritage Ski Center  in
Presque Isle has 12 kilometers of trails for snowshoeing. In the Katahdin region,
Millinocket is the place to go as the Millinocket Municipal Trails provides 60
miles or snowshoeing fun for the whole family. Trails and open spaces at
several of
Maine's state parks are also accessible year-round and offer great
snowshoeing in wooded and coastal locations.

Back Country Snowmobiling - From its base complex at the heart of Maine's
Interconnecting Trail System (ITS) in Bingham,
North Country Rivers offers
guided snowmobile tours catered to novice or advanced riders. Guests can
choose to travel west to the Rangeley Lakes region, north to Moosehead Lake or
Jackman, or northeast toward Mt. Katahdin. Snowmobiles and equipment can
be rented, and accommodations are available for couples and groups. Call
800-348-8871 for more information.

Farther north on U.S. Route 201 is
North American Outdoor Adventure , where
the specialty is back country tours on snowmobile trails with the highest
elevation in the Northeast. With direct access to three branches of the ITS, riders
can explore more than 10,000 miles of groomed trails that summit mountain
tops as tall as 3,750 feet. Complete rentals and trailside bed and breakfast
lodging is available. Call 800-727-4379 for more information.

For some of the best scenic snowmobiling in Eastern Maine, plan a trip with
North Woods Tours at First Settlers Lodge  in Weston. Remote trails over and
around ponds and lakes with views into New Brunswick, Canada, highlight a
guided back country adventure. North Woods Tours can accommodate groups
of 10 or more and can make lodge to lodge arrangements for overnight trips.
Call 207-448-3000 for more information.
