This Week's Stories:

Calendar Pick:
Vermont Maple Open House Weekend
March 19-20, 2011.
The Vermont Open House Weekend
is the public celebration of the maple
syrup season in Vermont and
an opportunity for the public to visit
one or more “sugarhouses” throughout
the state to learn about Vermont’s
first agricultural crop of the year.
Activities during this free event will
be different at each sugarhouse but
will include the opportunity to watch
maple syrup being made (weather permitting) and to often sample syrup and
other maple products.  For more info visit:
Vermont Maple Open House Weekend.

Feature:
New Hampshire's Maple Syrup Tradition
From mid-February through early April, the state’s maple producers repeat the 300
year old annual ritual of
tapping the maple trees that provide the annual fall
foliage display, collect and haul the sap to their sugarhouses -- some using
traditional buckets and horse or oxen-drawn sledges, some with high-tech plastic
tubing connecting the trees like a sweet spiderweb -- and then boil the sap down
to syrup: 25-75 gallons to produce one gallon of syrup.

March Gardening Tips
Sowing cole crops, planning your vegetable garden rotation, and pruning woody
plants are some of the gardening activities for this month.

Recipe:
Irish Mushroom Soup
This recipe, of obscure origin, is hand written in the oldest cook book that I own
from the 1970s. I’ve made many other mushroom soups, but this simple
preparation has remained a favorite, and I usually double the recipe because
requests for a second bowl are frequent.
