Notes from the Heart...Ice Harvest in Brookfield, Vermont

Saturday, January 21, 2011 | Brookfield, Vermont Ice Harvest

Bring the entire family for this unique event on Sunset lake.  Using turn of the
century techniques, you'll be able to experience how ice was harvested, cut and
moved by ice wagons.  You can also try out handmade snowshoes, ice sculpting
and see the famous Vermont Floating Bridge.  For more info: 802-276-3959

This Week's Stories:

Feature: Ayuh, Wicked! The Northern New England Accent, Explained
As a very basic overview of the New England accent (northern New England),
you’ll note a few things — we don’t seem to have the letter "r"— it’s usually
replaced as though the word was spelled with an "a-h". (This, by the way, happens
only at the ends of syllables, not at the beginning)...

Garden: Get the Most from Seed Catalogs
On one of those particularly cold and blustery wintry days, I like to gather up all
the seed catalogs that have arrived in my mailbox and settle down for a good
read.  Even if you don’t plan to buy from them but buy locally this spring, you can
learn much from catalogs if you understand a few key terms and all that may be
packed into the descriptions.

Recipe: REAL Mac & Cheese
Knowing pounds of yellow dye are being served to children every year in this
most popular “dinner” and with the temperature reading below zero before
sunset, with predictions of minus twenty temperatures tonight in central New
Hampshire, I decided it was time to make my version of this most popular of
comfort foods.
