Notes from the Heart...A Not-So-Scary Halloween for Little Ones

Not every child (or parent) likes those gory haunted houses. How about some
good old-fashioned farm Halloween fun instead? On Saturday, Oct. 30th, Billings
Farm & Museum will host the
17th Annual Family Halloween from 10:00 a.m.
until 5:00 p.m. Children in costume will be admitted free when accompanied by
an adult (adults pay the regular admission fee). Lots of horse-drawn wagon rides,
helping to crank pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin carvings, doughnuts-on-a-string,
“not-so-scary” Halloween stories, pumpkin games, and animal programs.
Costume parades at 12:00 & 2:00 pm and will be led by one of the Billings Farm's
friendly Southdown ewes and all children will receive a ribbon. Admission to the
Family Halloween includes all programs and activities, plus the working dairy
farm, farm life exhibits, and farm house. More info visit:
Billings Farm &
Museum.   ♥

This Week's Stories:

Feature: Curse of the Saco River
“You know this river is cursed don’t you?” Of course I didn’t, but I was sure
about to find out. As it turns out, there is an old legend in southern Maine
regarding the early English settlers and the Saco River.

Garden: Repot (Houseplants) or Not?
How do you know if a plant needs repotting?  Do any of your houseplants wilt
between normal waterings? Do the roots protrude from drainage holes? Has there
been little or no new growth? Are there white salts on the soil surface?

Recipe: Autumn Game Dish
Grilled Quail with a Sun-dried Cranberry & Pear Chutney accompanied with a fall
root vegetable medley in a Madeira wine.
