Notes from the Heart...Traveling Down Maine's Memory Lane

If you our your family grew up in Maine, you will be
interested in a project by the Maine Historical Society
called the
Maine Memory Network, which provides
access to over 20,000  historical items belonging to over
200 organizations from across Maine.  These include:
letters, journals, notes (and other hand-written materials),
photographs, painting, sketches, business cards, and even audio and video files
(a recent post was a film clip showing a parade in Millinocket in 1940, --

This Week's Stories:

Feature: The Historic Graveyards of Northern New England
I grew up near a cemetery and my family thought nothing of packing a picnic
lunch, finding a sunny spot, and leaning up against a Mr. or Mrs. Somebody who
had long departed the world we knew.  They're quiet, the dead, and they don't
mind sharing their final patches of earth.  The Upper Valley of New Hampshire is
flush with old graveyards, as is much of Northern New England, and can provide
a unique glimpse into the lives and deaths of people who tread here before.

Garden: Grow Nuts in New England
If you like nuts such as black walnuts, butternuts, Chinese chestnuts, and
hazelnuts, consider growing your own as their trees are hardy in northern
regions.  They make great ornamental shade trees as well.  Nuts are a good source
of proteins and other nutrients, feed wildlife, and require very few inputs of time
and resources—much less than most fruit trees.

"She's in the Kitchen."
