Notes from the Heart...Apple Festival -- Cornish, Maine

Mark your calendars -- September 25, 2010 -- for the 21st
annual Cornish Apple Festival in the scenic western
mountain and lakes region of Maine on Route 25
— 30 miles west of Portland and 9 miles east of the
New Hampshire border.  This free festival is held from
9 am to 4:30 pm in the center of Cornish village in historic
Thompson Park and features  this season’s apples, freshly
pressed cider and other apple products from local vendors,
apple pie baking contest & more!  For more information

Cornish Apple Festival.

This Week's Stories:

Feature: Climb Pitcher Mountain -- Beautiful Views, Wild PYO Blueberries
I've climbed Pitcher Mountain some 50 times.  This beautiful, small peak sits four
miles from my family's cottage on Stoddard, New Hampshire's Highland Lake,
and it's where we go to indulge our bodies in exercise and fill our souls with
beauty.  My 50 climbs aren't a testament to my athletic ability, but to Pitcher
Mountain's accessibility.

Garden: Understanding Lawn Thatch
If you want a healthy, attractive, and soft lawn to walk on, then you need to
understand the basics of the lawn component called “thatch.”

Recipe: Wild Blueberry Cobbler
This delicious, low-sugar cobbler can also be prepared with blackberries.  Both
fruits are excellent sources of phytochemicals and antioxidants. Recipe is courtesy
of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association.

The Frugal Yankee Tip of the Week

A friendly reminder: Be on the look out for yellow jack wasps. This time of year
they make new nests in dry earth or in holes in buildings. They're nasty suckers.
