Notes from the Heart...

An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving
Saturday & Sunday, November 27-29, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

After the Thanksgiving festivities are done, don't spend your
Thanksgiving weekend trapped at the mall.  Instead, visit
The Billings Farm & Museum in Vermont for a real treat: an
old fashioned Thanksgiving celebration.

You'll be welcomed to Frederick Billings's farmhouse,
where farm manager George Aitken and his wife and four daughters lived and
worked in 1890. Visit with costumed interpreters as they demonstrate cooking
traditional Thanksgiving fare in the farmhouse kitchen. Relax in the Victorian
parlor and learn how our American Thanksgiving tradition evolved. Enjoy a
freshly baked treat before touring the farm and boarding the wagon pulled by the
Percheron team for a ride around the farm.

The operating dairy farm and the restored and furnished farmhouse plus
programs and activities are included in the entrance fee. For more information:
802-457-2355 or visit
Billings Farm & Museum.

This Week's Stories:

Feature: Browsing for Book Bargains...at Homestead Bookshop
I get cheap thrills - grocery bags filled to the brim with used hardcovers and
paperbacks for about $15 a sack - from Robert Kenney's Homestead Bookshop in
Marlborough, New Hampshire.  The shop, which Kenney told me his parents
opened 35 years ago as a "retirement and fun business" and which Kenney has
run since 1981, is paradise for browsers and bargain-hunters.  I've been a regular
for 20 years...

Garden: Horticultural Myths
Myths may be a polite way of referring to statements or beliefs that are believed
true, but are not accurate or totally true.  The Internet has made possible the easy
proliferation of such misinformation. Two of these myths relating to household
products used in landscapes, often in attempts to be sustainable, concern
salts and baking soda....
Recipe: Braised Pork
This preparation is quite flexible. Timing is not critical, unless cooking continues
well beyond the time the meat is tender, in which case it can become stringy and
dry. Leftovers make a delicious pasta sauce...
