Notes from the Heart...

I relish the local foods that are now at our farmers'
markets -- and are bursting from my own garden.
In celebration of all this summer bounty, two
Walpole, NH-based farms are hosting a FREE
family-friendly celebration of local foods on
Saturday, August 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Walpole Valley Farms, along with its neighbor, Alyson’s Orchard, will host this
all-day fun (and educational) event on local foods, which will include
demonstrations and discussion of gardening/farming including pasturing
chickens, heirloom tomato tasting, a garlic growing q&a, traditional and
vermicomposting, organic garden and vegetable tours.  There will also be grass-
fed beef burgers on sale, live music, free cookie tasting and more!  Across the
road at Alyson's Orchard there will be PYO apples and peaches, free wagon rides
through the orchard, apple and wine tasting.

For more information including a schedule of events visit
Walpole Valley Farms
or call Jacqueline Caserta at 603-756-2855. Rain Date Sunday, August 30th.

This Week's Stories:

Pitcher Mountain: An Easy Climb to Wild Blueberry Picking
In late summer, climbers bring buckets and baskets and coffee cans and collect
the wild berries, leaving a dollar or two in a tin that the Faulkners nail to a
parking lot tree. While some of Pitcher Mountain is state-owned, the Faulkners
own the parts most day trippers visit.

Not all Blueberries are Created Equal
I'm picky about blueberries.   I grew up in Maine (where 90% of the nation's
blueberries are grown) so I guess I have good reason to be finicky; after all --
as everyone from Maine knows --  not all blueberries are created equal.
