Worth Quoting

"...But always, from the very beginning, it was snowflakes that fascinated me
most. The farm folks, up in this north country, dread the winter; but I was
supremely happy, from the day of the first snowfall -- which usually came in
November -- until the last one, which sometimes came as late as May."

~ Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley, Vermont Photographer, (1865-1931)

Notes from the Heart...

For someone with tropics in her blood I certainly do love winter.   I have been
feeling perfectly fine until the past few days when, like Bentley's farm neighbors,
I started to dread the next snowfall (which is approaching tonight).  In fact, I was
dreading the entire winter business...the boots, the coats, the cold, the lack of
enough daylight.   It was then I realized that I have not been using my light box
faithfully.  It is the one thing that keeps me sane and cheerful through our long
New England winter.  Yes folks, I have SAD (seasonal affective disorder,
otherwise known as the winter blues).  And SADly...it does not go away even
after many years of light box use in the winter.

So, this morning I perched my light box on my desktop and vowed to use it
faithfully every morning for 20 minutes.  A small price to pay for living in
northern New England.
Click here for more info on SAD.  And eating cinnamon
rolls (see this week's recipe) certainly can't hurt either!  ~ M.

The Frugal Yankee Tip of the Week

Keep your shaving razor sharper and longer with a little post shave care. Simply
dry the blade -- that'll prevent rust from dulling and nicking up the blade. Then
take an old toothbrush and brush off as much of the stubble stuck between the
blades and the casing. With some of those brand name blades costing $15.00 or so
a package, the savings will add up.

This Week's Stories:

Feature: White Mountains Getaway
Take an amazing trip through the White Mountains of New Hampshire with
gorgeous views, a visit to the home of the world wind speed record, and one of
most scenic train rides in the east.

Recipe: Cinnamon Rolls with Pecans & Raisins
These rolls are truly delicious, and most of the preparation time is unattended, so
they are perfect for holidays or special breakfasts. Make them a day ahead, and all
you have to do is to put them into a hot oven for a special breakfast for family or
friends.

From our Archives: Mountain Lions...in New England?
You are stopping by the country store in a small New Hampshire town for a few
essentials and overhear an animated conversation about a large cat with a long
tail that was seen at first light, skirting a local backyard.
