"New England has a harsh climate, a barren soil, a rough and stormy coast, and
yet we love it, even with a love passing that of dwellers in more favored regions”

~ Henry Cabot Lodge (American Senator and Historian. 1850-1924)

Notes from the Heart...

We've been eating our Christmas leftovers for several days now...but unlike
Thanksgiving leftovers there is quite a variety because we had a pot luck dinner
with many yummy choices.  We've just finished off the last of the shrimp/scallop
chowder, venison (not sure how it was made but it was incredibly delicious),
savory meatballs, and are getting ready to work on the black beans and rice soon.
The cheesecake is half gone, and I don't know if I can take much more of these
rich foods!  Once the food is all gone, I'm switching to healthy low fat foods, and
will try Charlie's recipe for
Mixed Bean Soup.  ~ m.

The Frugal Yankee Tip of the Week

You grab some masking tape. You pull on and it comes off in weird little pieces.
Toss that baby into the trash, right? Nope, nuke it. Yes, zap the roll of masking
tape for between 10 and 20 seconds and it will start working like it is supposed to.

This Week's Stories:

Feature: Dogsledding in Vermont
If you grew up reading Jack London’s Call of The Wild or White Fang as I did you
may long to experience a life style long since lost to many. You may have a love
of dogs and an appreciation for working dogs doing what they were bred to do.
Either way a visit to Vermont for a dogsledding experience may be just what you
are looking for.

Recipe: Mixed Bean Soup
Bean soup, a staple at our house, is the perfect winter lunch or light dinner and
during the holidays is a welcome respite from rich meals.

From our Archives: Vermont's Microbreweries
One of Vermont’s most important industries is the sale of artisan foods, novelty
items and fancy foods.  Among these is microbreweries—in fact, the state ranks
first in all the US for craft breweries per capita.
