generators.  But still, I'm glad we weren't one of the 400,000+ without power.
Keene, being tucked away in a little micro-climate valley, escaped most of the ice
storm damage.  But, our food writer, being a little more north in Sanbornton, NH,
did lose power for a bit (although he's back on the grid now).  But he sent some
pictures, not of the devastation, but the eerily beautiful landscape after the

The Frugal Yankee Tip of the Week

When cold weather is approaching or is on the scene, here is a tip from Germany -
drink cocoa. New research from Germany suggests high flavanol cocoa helps
blood vessels function better. The study was done in conjunction with exercise
and medication, but the statistical improvement was highly significant. The
amount consumed was 3 cups a day for 30 days. What this means is simple,
improving the blood vessels will enhance cardio-vascular health, a major concern
for many people including diabetics. (Source: The Week)

This Week's Stories:

Feature: Simple Gifts Live on at Canterbury Village, NH
Canterbury , New Hampshire has typical New-England features: Country store,
village green, acres of fields and forests, and miles of stone walls. But all roads
here seem to lead to one destination – the hilltop setting where a bit of heaven on
earth, a feeling of “kindly welcome” remains the hallmark of Canterbury Shaker

Recipe: Leek and Potato Soup
Leeks and potatoes are a natural combination, and this soup perfectly captures
their flavors. It is peasant fare, but we serve it on any occasion.

From our Archives: Family Friendly Brew Pubs in Maine
Brewpubs have popped up all over Maine in recent years, and I was once naïve
enough to think children weren’t allowed in bars, but now I know that there are
many brewpubs that are family friendly. Let me take you to three of my favorite.
