Keene Pumpkin Festival
Keene, New Hampshire

Each autumn, the city of Keene comes alive with the sights and sounds of this
annual celebration of community, bringing together thousands of people and
families from near and far. At the heart of the festival’s popularity is its emphasis
on participation. You are not just a spectator, you are the key to festival’s
success. Everyone who carves a pumpkin with their own special face or design
adds to the fun, not to mention the world record! Thousands contribute to the
spectacle by bringing their own hand-carved pumpkins. The sight of more than
25,000 brightly lit jack-o-lanterns lining Keene’s Main Street and towering over
the square is an unforgettable experience. Phone: 603-358-5344, or visit:

Notes from the Heart...

A friend remarked the other day about our dismal economy that perhaps now
New Englanders, with our frugal ways, will no longer be seen as just quaint:
"We're going to be trendsetters!" she said.  Ah yes, we've been shopping at thrift
stores, clipping coupons, planning our menus and saving money (okay, well, at
least trying to!) for years.  We're on the cutting edge!  ~M.

Celebrating the unique character & culture of Maine ~ New Hampshire ~ Vermont

This Week's Stories:

Feature: White Mountains, Remembered
A  two-part story with a father/daughter perspective on the gift of the White
Mountains, New Hampshire

Recipe: Roasted Pumpkin Soup
This soup has the taste of fall and makes a great way to start a dinner for guests,
but it is simple enough for family fare.

From our Archives: Wood Stoves: Keep Warm & Cut Pollution
With heating oil prices creeping ever higher, more and more New Englanders are
dusting off the old wood stove and hatchet, in hopes of a little cheap heat this
winter.  Before striking that first match, however, we would do well to look at the
environmental costs and benefits of wood burning.
