Notes from the Heart...

It won't be long now until we'll find frost in our gardens.  The nights are getting
cooler -- my thermometer outside our kitchen read 40 degrees this morning
(okay, its north facing).  But, we all feel that nip in the air.  Goodbye summer. ~M.

Dear Heart:

"I was born and brought up in Rhode Island but have lived in Georgia for the
past twenty years.  In my youth, I remember my father always getting us
Butternut Squash Pie for Thanksgiving and have been looking for the recipe
for years.  I looked on your recipes and you do not have one either.  I wonder if
one of your readers would have one.
[Marcia Rooks Kennesaw, Georgia.]

Anyone have a recipe for Butternut Squash Pie?  Email it to me at and I'll share it with our readers!  ~ m.

Celebrating the unique character & culture of Maine ~ New Hampshire ~ Vermont

This Week's Stories:

Feature: Air Pollution Clouds the View in New England
On top of Acadia National Park’s McFarland Hill in Maine a camera takes a
picture of the view across Frenchman Bay every 15 minutes. It’s part of a national
network of monitors that track air pollution in our national parks and wilderness
areas.  What, you may ask, is air pollution doing in our national parks and how
can you see with a camera?

Recipe: Pasta with Clam, Garlic and Herb Sauce
The olive oil, garlic and herbs perfectly balance the briny flavor of the clams and
broth, explaining why this combination appears in restaurants and homes all
over Italy.

From our Archives: Maine Drives: The Schoodic Scenic Byway
Maine is famous for its seacoast, for lobsters, lighthouses and beaches. Many
people drive up US RT 95 to RT 1 and through Portland, Freeport and Old
Orchard Beach. While this is a great way to see the coast and visit the factory
outlets in Freeport and Kittery, there's much more to Maine than you can see
from the highway or busy RT 1. Off many of the exits, just a few miles from the
bustling outlets and busy highways, there are many lesser known roads that will
thrill sight-seekers.
