Notes from the Heart...

There is still snow on the ground, the weather is still cold, our woodstove is still
blazing at night.  But the sap is flowing, the birds are singing, and I now refuse to
wear my boots.  Spring is almost here. And, for all of us Northern New
Englanders who braved this very long, hard winter, it is much deserved.
Happy Easter, happy spring!  ~ Marcia

Celebrating the unique character & culture of Maine ~ New Hampshire ~ Vermont

This Week's Stories:

Feature: Here Comes Peter Cottontail!
By Susan Nye (New Hampshire)
When we were little we always looked forward to Easter. Without fail we could
count on family reunions and parties, a festive new dress and the Easter Bunny.
Much to the delight and giggles of his two little girls, my Dad once dressed up as
the Easter Bunny. He was covered from head to foot with fake fur, sported a pink
nose, whiskers and a fluffy white tail. But I’ll get back to his transformation in a

Recipe: Pasta Amatriciana
By Charlie Burke (New Hampshire)
This makes satisfying and authentic Roman main dish pasta, needing only a fresh
salad and crusty bread to complete the meal.

From our Archives: Make a Date to Plant by the Moon
by Jeanne Sable (New Hampshire)
I began writing this column during an enormously bright full moon.  It made me
think of one clear, cold night a few winters ago, when the moon was closer to
earth than it had been in 133 years, and was said to be shining seven percent
more brightly than at any other time of year. That night, the buds in a vase of cut
flowers on the windowsill burst into magnificent bloom, remaining fresh and
open  for the better part of a month. That’s when I decided to take the ancient
wisdom of planting by the moon a bit more seriously.

Watch Salmon Stocking: Dash and Splash!

The Amoskeag Fishways presents a special event with Atlantic Salmon. Line up
and cheer on U.S. Fish and Wildlife biologists when they deliver adult
broodstock salmon to stock our fish ladder.  The ladder is running but the wild
fish have yet to swim up the Merrimack River .  So, while we wait, we stock fish
in the ladder for up close and personal underwater viewing!  Fishways staff and
biologists will be on hand to answer all of your questions!  Fill our Treasure
Chest Donation Box with a suggested donation of $2 per person or $5 per family.
