Notes from the Heart...

It's almost turkey day.  I'm lucky that I don't have to cook a thing -- we go to
Central NY to my sister-in-law's house, who cooks up the spread.  I just bring
my much-requested
cheesecake.  But if you're planning to have guests at your
house and need some help with how to cook that big bird and fixin's here are
some links to
Thanksgiving food stories & recipes from our archives:

Dear Heart,
I made the porcini monkfish tonight,it was outrageous ;-) It also suggested to
make this dish with potato pancakes but I could not find that on your site. Can
you help me?

Editor Response:  Wow, I do apologize for the broken links on the potato pancake
recipe!  Indeed – it is nowhere to be found in the archives.  Well, I’ve fixed all the broken
links on the monkfish recipe and in the archives.  Here is the recipe:
Potato Pancakes.
Best to you and bon appetit! ~ Marcia

Book Review #2:
Front Porch Tales
& North Country Whoppers
New Hampshire resident, Tomie dePaola, superstar children’s
book writer and illustrator, has loosed more than 200 books
upon the world in his long, celebrated career. In his new book,
Aiyah! Front Porch Tales & North Country Whoppers, retells,
Tomie-style, some of the Yankee yarns we were raised on.
He’s got the vernacular down good.  And, as usual, the
illustrations are half the fun.

Essay: Black Friday
The Friday after Thanksgiving marks the start of the holiday shopping season.
Sometime in the 1970’s it was christened “Black Friday". Some say the name
refers to the heavy traffic and chaos in the stores. Others contend it is the busiest
shopping day of the year and ensures profitability for retailers, putting them in
the black. Without question it is a dangerous day to go shopping.

Recipe: Spinach Soup
by Charlie Burke
Fresh spinach is still available locally, and this soup can be made a day or two
ahead and would be an ideal start to this year’s Thanksgiving dinner.
