Notes from the Heart...

When we first moved into our 1932 home we actually had a double pantry...but
it served only as a catch-all for a lot of stuff.  We have since opened up the
pantry so that it flows right into the kitchen.  Although it is all one big room
now, we still call it the "pantry." And for good reason: all our food is stored
there.  There certainly is something special about a pantry agrees NH writer
Catherine Seiberling Pond who authored the book "The Pantry: Its History and
Modern Uses."  This week we look at this lovely book with its beautiful photos
and delightful stories.

Readers Write

"We lived in Massachusetts and had to relocate to the Midwest about 8 years
ago.  We left our hearts in New England.  There is nowhere else on earth like
New England. As one of your readers said, it IS God's country.  There is a sense
of peace, freedom, creative spirit and natural beauty that are unrivaled.  As far
as my family is concerned, New England has it all and more.  We miss the
shore, the mountains, green landscapes, the New England states that value
history and preserve it, the Yankee spirit and resolve...Someday we hope to be
able to move 'home' again.  We are always homesick, but our lives keep us here
for the time being...Thank you for your newsletter!  It is a breath of fresh air and
it brings me close to home every time I read it."

"Thanks for The Heart of New England -- it's great!  I lived in California my
entire life but about 16 years ago I worked at the
Cog Railway over the summer
and have been in love with New England ever since.  Perhaps someday I'll get
to go back.  In the meantime, I'll just keep dreaming."

Lobster  Stew
By Charlie Burke
Many lobster stews are
truly elemental,
