Notes from the Heart...

For all you dads out there: Happy Father's Day.  This week, writer and Maine
resident (and a dad himself) Scott Warner takes us along on a fishing trip to
Maine along the mighty Penobscot River in search of fishermen who will give
him tips on the best fishing spots along the 60 mile stretch of river.  While the
smallmouthed bass are teeming...he isn't finding any fisherman.  Read this
week's feature,
Where the Fish Are...

And, strawberries are beginning to appear in our farmers' markets.  If you ever
wanted to grow your own, read the strawberry-growing primer:
How to Grow
Strawberries in New England.

Readers Write

One West Coast reader urges: "Don't miss the Bean Hole Day at the Lumberman
museum (in Maine, second Saturday in August)..fireworks, barbecues, Little
Miss pageant and sooooo much more!!  It is worth the 3000 mile journey for
me!"  'Nuf said!  Let's check it out at:
Patten Lumbermen's Museum's Bean
Hole Day and take note of their authentic Bean Hole Recipe, baked overnight in
the ground.

"I ran across your newsletter online while doing some research on New
Hampshire. My husband and I are seriously considering relocating to New
Hampshire from Florida. Many people think we are crazy but there is just
something about New England that we love... New England is one of the most
beautiful places on earth."  Courtney (FL)

Calamari on the Grill
By Charlie Burke
“One of my fondest memories of vacation is of our then seven year old son,
Michael, wandering away from me while I was fishing in Cape Cod Canal for
bluefish to watch in amazement as Portuguese fishermen caught squid a few
feet away."
