Notes from the Heart...

Happy Memorial Day weekend!  This week, New Hampshire resident Susan
Nye shares some special memories about Memorial Day: Every year since her
youth she has spent this long weekend at a little cottage on Pleasant Lake, NH.  
She writes: "In the coming days, all along the shores of Pleasant Lake, empty
summer houses will fill up, at least for the weekend.  Windows will be thrown
open to air out stuffy cottages.  Stray squirrels and mice will be chased out of

New England Clam Chowder
By Charlie Burke
Clam chowder is a New England tradition which, although there are many
variations, always includes milk or cream, onions, potatoes and either salt pork
or bacon. Although some make their chowder with soft shelled clams, called
“steamers”, in northern New England most use larger clams, such as quahogs
(“ko-hogs”) or cherry stones, which are chopped.
