Notes from the Heart...

Maine's wilderness areas provide the perfect getaway for those who just want
to truly "get away" from it all.  But if you are a city mouse, it is sometimes
best to explore Maine's deep woods with someone who knows the terrain.
That's where a registered guide can help.  This week's feature is about Maine's
many registered guides (did you know that Maine has a Professional Guide
Association?) who serve as a kind of "ambassador" to Maine's nooks and
crannies...and can even help you learn how to pan for gold!  Read this week's
story:
Find Your Way Around Maine's Wilderness -- Hire a Guide.

Billings Farm & Museum Celebrates
22nd Annual Sheep Shearing Weekend (Woodstock, Vermont)

Billings Farm & Museum, gateway to Vermont’s rural heritage, will host
Sheep Shearing Weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27, from 10:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Sheep Shearing Weekend showcases the spring shearing of
the farm’s Southdown flock at 11:00 a.m., noon, 1:00, 2:00 and 4:00 p.m., plus
the skills required to turn fleece into yarn. All ages may take a turn with
activities from carding wool to finger weaving. Lend a hand making maple ice
cream and enjoy baby animal programs, historic games, ox programs with the
farm’s team of Shorthorn steers, and hands-on activities. Planting the heirloom
vegetable garden will be underway as well.  The working dairy farm, farm life
exhibits, and the restored and furnished farmhouse are included in the
entrance fee.  Admission also includes our 22nd annual commemorative
spring button. For information, please contact the museum at 802/457-2355 or
www.billingsfarm.org.
