Notes from my back porch...

Driving through the countryside today I saw the
familiar blue tubings weaving in and out of the trees.
This is a sure sign of maple syrup season has begun.
(Backyard enthusiasts do still use metal buckets, but
the pros use the tubing.) Soon we'll see the little
sugarhouses billowing steam...producing that sweet
liquid gold!

I have six sugar maples in the backyard that I have been
wanting to tap for years now.  Someday I'll get to it.
But if you're craving making your own fresh maple syrup
this year
click here for a story on how to tap your own trees.

Do you happen to have birch trees on your property and no maples? No
problem! Did you know you can tap birch trees too?

Tuftonboro General Store: Where New England Sense of Community
Greg and Teri bought the Tuftonboro Country Store several years ago
when it was beginning to look like it would disappear from what was once
called Mackerel Corner.  It had been there since 1822.  Their expectation was
that it would take several years to shake out the bugs and be profitable.  But
the store, according to Greg, is doing fine.  In fact, it continues to
grow and add to it's offerings.

Chicken with Pecan-Parmesan Crust
by Charlie Burke
We’ve been adding nuts to our diet at breakfast and in salads, and I’ve been
experimenting with using ground nuts to replace breading for meat and fish.
The natural oil in the nuts, I’ve found, prevent the food from sticking,
permitting much less oil to be used. Additionally, the nuts add flavor to the
dish. In this recipe, I chose pecans to pair with chicken and added a small
amount of Parmesan cheese.

March 24, 2007 ~ Sap Gathering Contest at Stonewall Farm, Keene, NH
Learn more about the story of maple sugaring in New England. Each year
Stonewall Farm hosts about twenty teams of draft horses and their teamsters
to race along a course set up in the woodlands behind our Learning Center.
They gather sap from old-fashioned buckets, which are then dumped into a
large holding tank at the end of the run. Teams are judged for technique, time
and quantity, etc. Other activities include: Workhorse Obstacle Course, Maple
Sugaring Demos & Syrup Samples Hayrides, Small Animal, Area Exhibits,
Workshops and more. For more info visit
Stonewall Farm.

March 25, 2007~  Maple Sunday in Maine
Enjoy the first sweet taste of spring in Maine! Join Maine's maple Producers
each spring as they celebrate Maine Maple Sunday - the day when sugar
makers around the State open the doors of their sugarhouses for the public to
join them in their rites of spring - making maple syrup. Most sugarhouses offer
free tasting and a live demonstration of how syrup is produced, from tap to
table. Many offer a variety of other treats and activities, including syrup on
pancakes or ice cream, sugarbush tours, sleigh or wagon rides, and lots more.
Many sugarhouses will arrange special tours and demonstrations for groups on
other days as well - call them to make arrangements.  For more information
