How often does a weekend getaway live
up to its expectations (particularly a getaway
right before Christmas)? For me, I was hoping
I could roll a whole bunch of things into a long weekend: get some shopping
done, spend time with my then-teenage daughter, stay in a really beautiful inn
surrounded by mountains ... and, while I was at it, get into the Christmas spirit
by trudging through some freshly-fallen snow, listen to some nice Christmas
music, eat really good food, sample holiday cookies, wake up in  a room with
an alpine view, and tour magazine-quality decorated lodgings so I can get
some ideas for my own humble home.

Uh, setting the bar a little too high, you say?

Believe it or not, while I didn't consciously make out this laundry list of
delights, we experienced all of it during our weekend visit to the Mt.
Washington Valley of New Hampshire's Inn-to-Inn Cookie Tour -- an annual
event that takes place every second weekend in December, created by a group
of 17 inns in the region which are part of the Country Inns in the White

We shopped at the
Settler's Green Outlet Village
in North Conway (best deal of the weekend was
the $9.99 field coat I got for our son, marked down
from $50), and in the afternoon visited luxury
inns, sampled their cookies, inspected their
gingerbread house creations, and toured the
rooms.  "This is like trick-or-treating," commented
my daughter when we reached the 5th inn.
Yes, and without the trouble of dressing in
a silly costume.  Touring the inns was also
a little like the thrill of house-hunting
(without the stress of an impeding mortgage
payment!)  At the end of the day, we relaxed at the
Snowvillage Inn, which
lived up to its name with a several inches of fluffy snow already on the ground.

Join us now on a virtual cookie tour, where you'll sample our favorite cookie
recipes, and get a "taste" of some of the inns we visited.  (My daughter took
many of the photographs)...
