Blue Skye Farm

Blue Skye Farm is located on a peninsula
in the middle of Midcoast Maine.
It was purchased by the Davidsons
in the year 2000 and sensitively converted
to a six bedroom inn with 5 bathrooms and 4 working fireplaces.  In addition to
the hundred acres belonging to Blue Skye, the property adjoins thousands of
acres of preserved woodland, comprising the largest piece of undeveloped land
in Midcoast Maine.  It is open year round and offers full use of its grounds and
tracked woodland for hiking, birding, picnics, barbecues, snowshoing, cross
country skiing and nature walks.  Artists find particular inspiration here.

Q&A with innkeeper, Jan Davidson

What is the history behind Blue Skye Farm?

Blue Skye was built in 1774  as a Cape style house by Abijah Waterman. In the
1790's, the Federal style front of the house was added.  The Moses Eaton stencils
in the front hall and staircase and top landing date from around 1800.  The house
stayed in the hands of the Waterman family until 1931.

Why did you purchase the Blue Sky Farm?

We have always entertained and travelled extensively and with our combined
backgrounds in  advertising (Peter was an art director) and design and fashion
(Jan owned a boutique) were interested in using all of our skills to create the sort
of Maine Inn we would enjoy.  A Quintessential Maine house with the feeling of
a French auberge.  This house is a perfect example of 18th century architecture
and offered the advantage of the cottage for us to use as our home.

What kind of shape was it in when you purchased it and what kind of renovation work
was required?

The house was a well-loved family home and in very good repair.  We needed
however to do extensive work (deeper well, 4 bathrooms, restore open
fireplaces, etc) as well as impose our own taste on the interior styling.

What is your favorite spot or room?

The child's sleeping bunk in the Attic Room is a wonderful hideaway and many
snowy afternoons have been spent there with a good book.

What makes a stay at the Blue Skye Farm unique?

As we live next door, our guests have full use of the house including the kitchen
and of course, in the summer, the grounds for picnics and barbecues etc.

What kind of specials do you have for your guests throughout the year?

We try to offer something new each month.  Check the website!

When is the best time of year to stay at the Blue Skye Farm?

Clearly, we are busiest in summer.  But to us, winter is the best time.  The trails
are open and the hiking is wonderful.  And coming back in to a crackling fire is
always nice.

Please tell us a little about your area of Maine.

We're right in the landscape which so inspired painter Andrew Wyeth with
cosmopolitan Camden just a half hour away and with the ocean, rivers and
wilderness all within easy reach.

What is a “can’t miss” attraction in your area?

Breakfast at Blue Skye!  It's variable according to season but typically bowls of
prepared fruit (pineapple with mint, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries)
mixed fruit salad (melon and grapes for instance) several kinds of fruit juice,
large selection of teas, and freshly ground coffee, homemade banana bread,
zucchini bread, a large peasant loaf from organic bakery which guests slice
themselves, several granola mixes, organic yogurt.  Guests mix and match as
they wish and then there is always  something cooked - for example breakfast
souffle or fritatta which is brought into dining room and guests help themselves
as they wish.  I think breakfast is important and while strawberry soup may
appeal to some, most people prefer a beautifully presented version of what they
are used to - fruit, cereal, bread and eggs.
